Salvadoran National Civil Police Director Carlos Ascencio acknowledged on 19 April 2011 that police efforts have had a minimal impact on the hundreds of tons of drugs being moved through El Salvador, adding that agents must inspect cargo quickly and without technological assistance. The largest drug seizure reported by the PNC in recent years was 88 kilograms of cocaine, confiscated in August 2009. Ascencio also reported the increased prevalence of gang members peddling small quantities of drugs on the streets.
